Book Review: After the Rain by Renée Carlino

After the Rain by Renée CarlinoMan, oh man. This book. I don’t think there is a word to describe this book. It was spectacular, amazing, phenomenal, everything I have ever wanted in a book. I haven’t reviewed any of Renée’s other books, but let me tell you all her books are freaking fantastic. I’ve devoured every single one of them and I am impatiently waiting for her next release. According to GoodReads, it is, Before We Were Strangers: A Novel, and it is set to be released on August 4th, 2015. So, way too freaking long. :) However, we aren’t here to only talk about how amazing Renée Carlino is, we are also here to talk about her amazing newest release, After the Rain. So, without further ado…

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a deeply emotional contemporary romance about the second chances waiting beyond the shattered dreams of youth.
Under the bright arena lights of a rodeo show, young Avelina Belo falls for a handsome cowboy with a larger-than-life personality. After a whirlwind courtship, she happily moves away from her family in northern California and settles into married life with her cowboy on a seven-thousand-acre cattle ranch in Montana. One freak accident later, Avelina’s hopes for the future come to an end.

Nate Myers graduated from UCLA medical school at the top of his class, ready to follow in the footsteps of his father, a superstar cardiothoracic surgeon. Six years later, Nate’s career is being ruined by a malpractice suit. Questioning himself for the first time, he retreats to a Montana cattle ranch to visit his uncle and gain perspective. There, he meets a beautiful young woman named Avelina who teaches him more than he ever knew about matters of the
heart. (GoodReads)
After the Rain, follows Avelina “Ava” Belo and Nathanial “Nate” Meyers. A horse trainer/instructor and a heart surgeon. This story is full of topics that are heartbreaking and make you want to cry into a whole entire box of tissues. But, this book also made laugh out loud. There have been many books that make me laugh, or giggle, but there is one scene in this book that literally had me in tears from laughing so hard. It was absolutely hilarious. If you have read the book, then you might know what I am talking about. (Nate & a constipated horse) I mean come on…

Avelina, (by the way, what a gorgeous name) has a had a really hard go at life. She thinks that she is cursed because of her middle name, Jesús de los Santos (which translates into Jesus of the Saints). She feels like it’s a lot to live up to and that she is doing a horrible job at it. Ava loses her father at the young age of sixteen to lung cancer. Not only is Ava devastated because she couldn’t save her father, but her mother is distraught and doesn’t know how to go on without her husband. To make ends meat, Ava takes up barrel-racing. At eighteen years old, during one of her competitions, Ava meets a “charismatic cowboy” named Jake McCrea. He is a twenty-one year old cowboy that sweeps Ava off of her feet. She falls head-over heels in love with him and they end getting married three months later. About a year and half or so later tragedy strikes and Ava’s world is turned upside down and she doesn’t know how to cope with what life has thrown at her. How will she go on when she doesn’t know what she’s living for anymore?

Nate Meyers has always wanted to be a doctor, he wasn’t always sure he wanted to be a heart surgeon like his very successful father, but he wanted to be a doctor known the less. Well, he did it, he became exactly like his father. Which wasn’t a bad thing, but Nate also lost his way when he was in school and working at the hospital. He realizes after a rough surgery that he doesn’t have anyone to come home to, there’s no one to help him when he needs it. Nate takes some time away from the hospital and visits his uncle, a veterinarian, on a ranch in Missoula, Montana. Little does Nate know, but he is going to be introduced to everything he has always been looking for, but didn’t know he needed.

Now, I absolutely loved this book!! I don’t really have anything bad to say about it, other than that it ended. :) I have always, and will always be a huge Renée Carlino fan. I love her writing and they way she makes you feel when you read her books. It’s never just a story with her. There’s always something that you take away from her books. A life lesson that sticks with you. With this book it was that you have to except what life throws at you and learn and grow from it. You can’t let the hardships drag you down. Or more simply, life goes on.

As I said, I’m really excited to read more from Renée and I’ll be impatiently waiting until August for her next book.
